Alva H. Beekman Jr. was born in Johnstown, New York, on June 24, 1889. By 1900, he was living in the city of Schenectady with his family. He was a carpenter by trade and worked for his father before joining the army.
On March 7, 1918, Alva enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Greene in North Carolina. He was a sergeant serving with Company F, 58th Infantry Regiment. Alva was killed on October 5, 1918, after being wounded in the stomach by a machine gun in the Argonne Forest. He is buried in Vale Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
