World War I (1914-1918)

Marcley James Hilderbrand was born in Schenectady, New York, on March 8, 1899. Before joining the army, he worked as an apprentice for General Electric. 

On March 27, 1917, Marcley enlisted in the United States Army. He was sent overseas aboard the US Army troopship USS U.S. Grant, on May 17, 1918, and arrived in Brest, France, on May 30, 1918. Marcley was a mechanic with the Machine Gun Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. He served at the Dickebusch Sector, Vierstrant Ridge, the Knoll, the Hindenburg Line, the LaSalle River, the Joue de Mer Ridge, and the St. Maurice River. Marcley died of disease on October 22, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He is buried in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
