World War II (1939-1945)

Leo W. Kirk was born in Middletown, New York, on July 4, 1922. By 1925, he was living with his family in the city of Schenectady. He was a student at Mont Pleasant High School and was involved in the art club. Before joining the military, he worked for General Electric. 

On December 15, 1941, Leo enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a staff sergeant serving with the 555th Bomber Squadron, 386th Bomber Group, Medium. On July 18, 1944, in Normandy, France, Leo was killed in combat when his B-29 suffered a direct hit to the right engine, fell out of formation, and crashed. He is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Normandy, France.
