Louis J. Leva was born in Schenectady, New York, on June 27, 1920. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, attending Park Place School and St. John the Baptist School before graduating from Nott Terrace High School in June 1939. During his high school years, he was a standout cross-country runner, earning the title of New Distance Sensation from the Schenectady Gazette. Before enlisting in the military, he worked for General Electric.
On May 4, 1942, Louis enlisted in the United States Army. He was a corporal serving with Company M, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. Louis died on August 3, 1944, in Vire, Département du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France, from wounds sustained due to the blast of an aerial bomb during battle. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
