Virginio Martini, the son of Domenico and Carolina (Ruggieri) Martini, was born on November 16, 1912. He attended public schools in Schenectady and participated in a basketball league. In 1936, he earned his degree from Union College.

On January 9, 1941, Virginio enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of First Lieutenant and served with the 27th Field Artillery, 1st Armored Division. He reported for duty in March 1944 and traveled straight to Italy, where he took part in the Anzio Campaign. Virginio was wounded during combat and died on May 31, 1944, from his wounds. He is buried in the Sicily Rome American Cemetery and Memorial, Italy.
