Richard W. Nellis, the son of Ernest and Edna (Burington) Nellis, was born on April 27, 1920, in Watertown, New York. He earned his degree from Albany Business College in 1940 and went on to work for General Electric as an accountant in the company's payroll division.

On January 15, 1942, Richard enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He held the rank of Second Lieutenant. On January 15, 1943, off the coast of Jones Beach, New York, he was killed when his P-47 Thunderbolt caught fire. Richard is buried in the North Watertown Cemetery, Watertown, New York.
