William Frederick Peternell Jr., the son of William and Catherine (Spannbauer) Peternell, was born on September 21, 1924, in Schenectady, New York. He worked at the Piggly Wiggly Supermarket and went to Draper High School.
William enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and completed his training at Florida's St. Petersburg and Clearwater. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant and served with the 568th Bomber Squadron, 309th Bomber Group, Heavy. On November 16, 1943, William died in an aviation explosion in England. He is buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, England.
William was known as the "Sergeant Kid" to his fellow soldiers.
