Sidney Podhoretz, the son of Samuel and Anna (Schwartz) Podhoretz, was born on February 3, 1925, in Schenectady, New York. In addition to working at the Pleasant Valley Meat Market, he graduated from Mont Pleasant High School.

Sidney enlisted in the United States Army and held the rank of Corporal. When he was offered the chance to fly home for the weekend, he was stationed in Avon Park Florida. The B-17 Flying Fortress caught fire six miles outside Ridgeland, South Carolina, on August 5, 1945, while Sidney was returning from his weekend in Schenectady. Sidney did not survive after the pilot ordered everyone to jump. He is buried in the Beth Israel Cemetery, Rotterdam, New York.
