World War II (1939-1945)

George Robert Race was born in Schenectady, New York, on April 18, 1919. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1937. He completed General Electric's apprentice program in June 1942.

In October 1942, George enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine. He was stationed on the SS Henry R. Mallory when on February 7, 1943, it was torpedoed and sank; he was never found. He is remembered at the Mont Pleasant Neighborhood War Memorial in Schenectady, New York.
