Evans Veeder Crawford Rector was born in Glenville, New York, on May 14, 1922. By 1930, he was living in the city of Schenectady. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1940, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the basketball team. He was also a Boy Scout in Troop 1.
In 1940, Evans enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Totten in Queens, New York; he then went on to attend officer candidate school at Camp Davis in North Carolina and was commissioned in 1942. In 1943, he landed in Africa and participated in the African Campaign. During the campaign he became ill and was sent back to the states. Evans died on August 5, 1944, in Denver, Colorado; his mother had been with him since May. He is buried in the Fairmount Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
