Charles Albert Schaeffer, the son of Joseph and Helena (Safford) Schaeffer, was born on January 30, 1920, in Schenectady, New York.

On January 16, 1942, Charles enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant and served with the 760th Bomber Squadron, 460th Bomber Group. On February 19, 1944, Charles was serving as the aerial gunner on a B-24H Liberator that was on a training flight. When the Liberator crashed in Italy due to severe weather, it was on its way back to its base in Spinozza. In total, fourteen soldiers died. Charles is buried in the Sloansville Valley Cemetery, Schoharie County, New York.
