World War II (1939-1945)

Frederick Ferdinand Wohlstein Jr. was born in Schenectady, New York, on July 3, 1921. He grew up in the city of Schenectady on Pennsylvania Avenue, graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1938, and then enrolled in Albany State College for Teachers. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.

In September 1942, Frederick enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a second lieutenant serving with the 488th Bombardment Squadron, 340th Bomber Group, Medium, and served as a navigator-bombardier on a Mitchell B-25. On August 15, 1944, Frederick was killed above Avignon, France, and was never found. He is remembered at the Evergreen Memorial Park in Colonie, New York.
