Gary Larson Harlan, the son of Samuel and Stella (Bittner) Harlan, was born on September 15, 1931, in Jersey Shore, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. In 1940, he relocated to Schenectady with his family. He worked for the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company after graduating from Mont Pleasant High School in 1949.
Gary enlisted in the United States Army on April 28, 1952, and received basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He held the rank of Private Second Class and served with the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Gary arrived in North Korea on October 21, 1952, and was killed on October 26, 1952, after spending just three days in the front lines. He is buried in the Jersey Shore Cemetery, Pennsylvania.
