Marlin Lynn Siegwalt was born in Phelps, Ontario County, New York, on March 30, 1937. By 1950, he was living in the town of Arcadia, in Wayne County, New York. He graduated from Newark High School in Newark, New York, in 1955, where he played on the football and basketball teams and also ran track; he went on to graduate from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, in 1959. Marlin, his wife, and their two children made their home in Schenectady, New York, when he decided on a career in the Air Force.
On November 21, 1967, Marlin began his tour of duty in Vietnam as a captain in the United States Air Force. On October 30, 1968, while he was piloting a plane in Laos, a sniper shot him. The co-pilot was able to land the plane safely, but Marlin had already died from the gunshot wound. He is buried in the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
