Robert Stuart Cragin Jr. was born in Schenectady, New York, on June 21, 1944. He grew up in the Town of Niskayuna, Schenectady County, New York. In 1959, he graduated from Van Antwerp Junior High School; in 1962, he graduated from Niskayuna High School; and in 1966, he graduated from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service.
In February 1967, Robert enlisted in the United States Army. He was a first lieutenant serving with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On February 26, 1968, Robert was killed in combat close to Can Tho in the South Vietnamese province of Phong Dinh. He is buried in the Memory Gardens Cemetery and Memorial Park, Colonie, New York.
