World War I (1914-1918)

Walter Z. Hilt was born in Troy, New York, on April 25, 1889. After 1915, Walter was living with his brother in the city of Schenectady. He had worked as an undertaker and in the shipment department at Carl Company before joining the military. 

On May 28, 1918, Walter enlisted in the United States Army. On July 6, 1918, he was sent overseas aboard the U.S. Army troopship HMS Kashmir. He was assigned to Company G, 53rd Pioneer Infantry, and held the rank of private. Walter died of pneumonia in France on October 24, 1918.  He is buried in the Eagle Mills Cemetery in Rensselaer County, New York.
