Ernest Leonard Roth, the son of Louis and Rose (Strauss) Roth, was born on September 16, 1923, in Schenectady, New York. By 1930, he was living with his family in Los Angeles, California. Ernest graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School.

Ernest enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He held the rank of First Lieutenant and served with the 359th Bomber Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group, Heavy. On May 19, 1944, Ernest was piloting a B-17G bomber "Sky Duster" over Berlin when it was damaged by flak and crashed. Six of the ten crew members were killed in the accident, including Ernest. He is remembered at the Henri Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, Belgium.
