Clifford Millard VanBuren, the son of Millard and Daisy (Regels) VanBuren, was born on May 17, 1920, in Carmen, New York. He was residing in Schenectady with his family when the 1930 census was taken. He went to vocational high school, worked for General Electric, and was a member of the Bellevue Reformed Church.

In September 1942, Clifford enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He received his training in Parris Island, South Carolina, Quantico, Virginia, and San Diego, California. Clifford held the rank of Private First Class and served with the 9th Amphibious Tank Battalion, 6th Marine Division. On June 4, 1945, Clifford was killed during the Battle of Okinawa. He is buried in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie, New York.
