World War II (1939-1945)

Magnus Carl Reinertsen was born in Schenectady, New York, on April 4, 1924.  He grew up in the town of Rotterdam in Schenectady County, and before he began working, he finished the seventh grade at Draper School. Before entering the military, he held jobs with several companies, including Western Union and the Postal Telegraph Company, and he also worked as a messenger for General Electric.

In June 1942, Magnus enlisted in the United States Navy. He received his training in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a seaman second class serving on the USS Tasker H. Bliss. During the invasion of Africa, the USS Tasker H. Bliss was taking part in Operation Torch when it was torpedoed off the coast of Casablanca by a German submarine (U-130) on November 12, 1942. Magnus and most of the crew were never found. He is remembered at the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial in Africa.
