Arthur Van Voorhis Crego was born in Claverack, New York, on May 13, 1893. His new job at General Electric took him to Schenectady. Arthur was a member of the Schenectady Boat Club and an accomplished swimmer and paddler.

On February 22, 1916, Arthur enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Corporal and served with Company C, 102nd Field Battalion, 27th Infantry Division. On October 17, 1918, while fighting in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Arthur was killed in Battle. He is buried in the Claverack Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery, Claverack, New York.
