Burdell (Bud) Smith Winter was born in Schenectady, New York, on November 29, 1924. He grew up in the town of Niskayuna on Myron Street, graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1943, skied competitively, and worked at the US Army Depot before entering the military.
Burdell enlisted in the United States Army. He was a second lieutenant serving with the 85th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division. On April 14, 1945, he was killed during combat near Hill 913, situated north of Castel d’Aiano in the Italian Northern Apennines. He was accompanying the company commander through minefields and under heavy artillery and mortar fire, relaying messages to assist in directing Allied mortar strikes when he was killed. He is buried in the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial in Italy.
