Charles Bernard Shapiro, the son of Julius and Rose (Romanoff) Shapiro, was born on February 2, 1919, in Schenectady, New York. He attended Mont Pleasant High School and participated in baseball, football, basketball, and other sports. Before joining the military, Charles worked for General Electric.

On November 9, 1943, Charles enlisted in the United States Army. He was assigned to the 117th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron and held the rank of Technician Fifth Grade. On February 3, 1945, Charles was killed in combat in France. He is buried in the Beth Israel Upper Cemetery, Rotterdam, New York.
