Charles Bernard Shapiro was born in Schenectady, New York, on February 2, 1919. He grew up mostly in Schenectady County except for the short time he was living in Cambridge, New York. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1937, where he was a member of the baseball, football, and basketball teams. Before joining the military, he worked for General Electric.
On November 9, 1943, Charles enlisted in the United States Army. He was a technician fifth grade serving with the 117th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. On February 3, 1945, Charles was killed in battle in France. He is buried in the Beth Israel Upper Cemetery in Rotterdam, New York.
