World War II (1939-1945)

Charles Henry Butler Jr. was born in Albany, New York, on October 17, 1920. In 1930, he was living with his family in Schenectady, New York. After graduating from Mont Pleasant High School, Charles started working for General Electric.

In October 1942, Charles enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve. He underwent his military training in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Pensacola, Florida. He was an ensign and was also a photo reconnaissance pilot. On February 17, 1945, Charles' plane went missing while engaging in the first fighter plane strike on Tokyo. He is remembered at the Honolulu Memorial, Courts of the Missing, Hawaii.
