Courtland Phillip Saaf was born on July 4, 1923, in Schenectady, New York. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1941.
Courtland enlisted in the United States Navy. He held the rank of Seaman Second Class. On November 13, 1942, he was aboard the USS Juneau when it was sunk during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. As a result of the boat sinking, 687 men were killed in action, including the five Sullivan brothers. Courtland is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Philippines.
