Douglas Philip Smith, the son of Arthur and Marie (Tabor) Smith, was born on February 16, 1917, in Schenectady, New York. Prior to enlisting in the military, he worked for General Electric after earning his diploma from Scotia Glenville High School.

Douglas enlisted in the United States Army in February 1944, and he attended Camp Croft in South Carolina for his basic training. He held the rank of Private and served with the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On August 30, 1944, Douglas was killed in battle in France. He is buried at the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, France.
