Douglas William Blankschen, the son of Wiiliam and Bertha (Peer) Blankschen, was born on February 21, 1918, in Scotia, New York. By 1944, he had moved to Whitehall, New York. Douglas was working as a doorman before he joined the United States Army.
Douglas enlisted in the United States Army on November 22, 1944, and received training at Camp Campbell in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. He served in Germany, Japan, and the Hawaiian Islands during World War ll.
Douglas was sent to Korea in 1950. He held the rank of First Sergeant and served with Headquarters Company, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On October 10, 1950, while his regiment was moving to the Port of Pusan, South Korea, in preparation for amphibious landing at Wonsan, North Korea, he died in an automobile accident. Douglas is buried in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Whitehall, New York.
