Edward C. "Buddy" Bates was born in Plattsburgh, New York, on December 15, 1919. At a young age, he and his parents relocated to Schenectady, New York. He attended Halsey Elementary School and Central Park Junior High School. In 1941, Edward completed his education at the Vocational High School, and soon after, he entered the army.
Edward enlisted in the United States Army. He was a corporal serving with the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. On January 16, 1943, Edward was killed in battle in North Africa. He is buried in the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial, Tunisia.
