Edward C. Bates, the son of Edward and Jennie Bates, was born on December 15, 1919, in Plattsburgh, New York. At a young age, he and his parents relocated to Schenectady. He was a student at Central Park Junior High School and Halsey School. In 1941, Edward completed his education at the Vocational High School, and soon after, he entered the Army.
Edward enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Corporal and served with the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. On January 16, 1943, Edward was killed in battle in North Africa. He is buried in the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial, Tunisia.
