Edward Charles Gelsleichter was born in Schenectady, New York, on April 20, 1921. He grew up on Mason Street in the city of Schenectady and graduated from Nott Terrace High School. Before joining the military, he was a student at Ohio State University and was expected to graduate in 1945.
In November 1942, Edward enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a first lieutenant serving with 431st Bomber Squadron, 11th Bomber Group, Heavy. On July 28, 1944, during his 28th mission, Edward, a bombardier aboard the B-24 Liberator "Sleepy Time Gal," went missing. At the time of his last assignment, he was stationed in the Marshall Islands. He is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines.
