Edward Synder was born on June 7, 1915, in the village of Nelliston, New York. Before enlisting, he first worked at Pedrick's Restaurant in Gloversville, New York, and afterwards for General Electric.

On October 11, 1943, Edward enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Private First Class and served with Company K, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Infantry Division. On April 15, 1945, Edward was killed in battle during the assault on Mount Croce in Italy. It was one of the 10th Mountain Division's bloodiest battles. His son was born at home in Schenectady, New York, on the same day that Edward was killed. He is buried in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, Colonie, New York.
