Elmer John Herzog, the son of Philip and Clara (Southard) Herzog, was born on September 9, 1889, in Schenectady, New York. He lived in the Village of Scotia in Schenectady County. He was a member of the Schenectady Boat Club, as well as a bowler, tennis player, and Boy Scout scoutmaster. Before leaving Schenectady for duty Elmer told the President of the boat club “I expect to go to France, I’ve nothing to fear, if it is my duty to sacrifice myself for the good cause I will be perfectly satisfied.”
On February 1, 1916, Elmer enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Sergeant and served with the Machine Gun Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. Elmer died of pneumonia on October 30, 1918, in Rouen, France. He is buried in Park View Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
