Gano Haines Jewell, the son of Harold and Jewel (Parslow) Jewell, was born on September 21, 1923, in Middlefield, New York. In 1930, he moved to Schenectady with his family. Following his 1942 Nott Terrace High School graduation, he attended Union College until June 1943.
In June 1943, Gano enlisted in the United States Army and attended Camp Grant, Illinois, for his basic training. At O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, he received his certification from the Technician and Advanced Technician programs. Gano served with Company I, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division and held the rank of Private First Class and Advanced Medical Technician. He was sent overseas in May 1944. While working as a field medic in France on August 4, 1944, Gano was killed. He is buried in the Westville Cemetery, Otsego County, New York.
