Gary Larson Harlan was born in Jersey Shore, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, on September 15, 1931. In 1940, he moved with his family to Schenectady, New York. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1949 and was working for the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P) in the City of Schenectady before entering the military.
On April 28, 1952, Gary enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Dix in New Jersey. He was a private second class serving with the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Gary arrived in North Korea on October 21, 1952, and was killed on October 26, 1952, after spending just three days on the front lines. He is buried in the Jersey Shore Cemetery in Pennsylvania.
