World War II (1939-1945)

George James Pitts Jr. was born in Schenectady, New York, on May 27, 1924. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, and by the 1940 census, he had moved to Watervliet in Albany County, New York. He was away for only a short period before moving back to Schenectady, where he graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1942. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.

George enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He received his gunners' wings at Fort Myers in Florida. George was an armorer gunner on an A-20 attack bomber and was stationed at Morris Field in North Carolina when, on April 18, 1945, he died in a plane crash in South Carolina. He is buried in the Park View Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
