George Richard Kelly, the son of Alfred and Lillian Kelly, was born on October 17, 1929, in Schenectady, New York. In 1947, he received his diploma from Nott Terrace High School. George played basketball for the school.
Soon after graduating, George enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He held the rank of Corporal and served with the Machine Gun Platoon, Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. George died on June 7, 1951, as a result of wounds sustained while defending his position on Hill 516 during the Battle of Punchbowl. He is buried in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, New York.
