George Smith, the son of William and Minnie (Willey) Smith, was born on February 8, 1922, in Albany, New York. By 1925, he was residing in Schenectady with his family. Before enlisting in the military, George worked for General Electric and attended Mont Pleasant High School.

On October 14, 1942, George enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Private and served with Company B, 397th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division. On November 15, 1944, George was killed in battle in France. He is buried in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie, New York.
