Henry Bennit Potter, the son of Frank and Nellie (Bennit) Potter, was born on July 29, 1896, in Troy, New York. By 1910, he was living in Schenectady, New York. He was well-known in vocal circles, having been a member of the festival choir and St. George's Church.

On July 29, 1917, Henry enlisted in the United States Army. He was a Corporal in the 23rd Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division. On October 8, 1918, Henry died of pneumonia in a French base hospital. He is buried in the Meuse Argonne American Cemetery, France.
