Herbert James Smith, the son of Benjamin and Margaret (Clark) Smith, was born on March 27, 1924, in Schenectady, New York. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School.
Herbert enlisted in the United States Army in April of 1943. He held the rank of Private and served with Company H, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. On February 14, 1945, Herbert was killed in action during the Battle of Luzon. He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam, New York.
