World War II (1939-1945)

Herbert James Smith was born in Schenectady, New York, on March 27, 1924. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and was a student at Nott Terrace High School.

In April 1943, Herbert enlisted in the United States Army. He was a private and serving with Company H, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. On February 14, 1945, Herbert was killed in action during the Battle of Luzon. He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery, in Amsterdam, New York.

*Herbert was a member of the famous "Lost Battalion" of the 24th Division.
