James Michael Hollenbeck, the son of George and Julia (Delia Rocco) Hollenbeck, was born on October 3, 1920, in Schenectady, New York. Prior to joining the United States Marine Corps, he worked for the General Electric Company and served in the New York National Guard.
In October 1943, James enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He received his basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, before moving on to Jacksonville, Florida, to train at the Naval Air Station. James held the rank of Private First Class and served with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines. He was sent overseas in September 1944. On February 28, 1945, James was killed in battle on Iwo Jima. He is buried in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie, New York.
