James Oscar Sutcliffe was born in Scafati, Italy, in 1888. On August 13, 1913, he arrived in America on the RMS Oceanic, with a final destination of Schenectady.
On June 1, 1916, James enlisted in the United States Army. He was a Sergeant with the Headquarters Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. On November 16, 1918, James died in France from spinal meningitis. He is buried in the Somme American Cemetery and Memorial, France. When James died, he had a nine-month-old son named James Henry.
