John Charles Landers, the son of Charles and Katherine Landers, was born on December 18, 1916, in Amsterdam, New York. In 1935, he graduated from St. Mary's Catholic Institute, and in 1939, he graduated from St. Michael's College in Vermont. John was a standout high school and college basketball player. He worked for General Electric and moved to Schenectady after his marriage in November 1942.
On August 15, 1942, John was commissioned in the United States Navy. He volunteered for motor torpedo boat service right away and attended the Motor Torpedo Boat School in Melville, Rhode Island. Lieutenant Junior Grade was John's rank. On October 11, 1943, while serving as an engineering officer with a squadron of torpedo boats in the South Pacific, John drowned. He is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, New York.
