John was born in Russia on November 17, 1895, and immigrated to America in 1908. Before joining the army, he worked for the American Locomotive Company.

On June 21, 1917, John enlisted in the United States Army. He was a Private in Company F of the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. On May 17, 1918, John embarked on the USS President Grant for his first overseas deployment. On September 30, 1918, he died of wounds suffered during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.  He is buried in the Somme American Cemetery and Memorial, France.
