John James Quinlan, the son of James and Daisy Quinlan, was born on May 2, 1917, in Schenectady, New York. He received his diplomas from Nott Terrace High School and Union College. At Union College he participated in the glee club, chorus, football, and track.

In January, 1941, John enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He held the rank of Second Lieutenant and served with the 339th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group. On April 9, 1944, John went missing over Denmark. He is remembered at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Colonie, New York.
