John V. Larson, the son of Rev. Julius and Jennie (Johnson) Larson, was born on July 26, 1923, in Spring Lake, Minnesota. He moved to Schenectady to attend Union College and afterwards began working for General Electric. John was an active member of Schenectady's Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church.

In December 1942, John enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Private First Class and served with 324th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division. John was wounded while serving in France on December 5, 1944, and died as a result of his wounds on December 15, 1944. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, France.
