Ransom Mead Barrett was born on March 5, 1887, in Margaretville, Delaware County, New York. In 1907, he moved to Schenectady. Prior to joining the military, Ransom was a member of the Odd Fellows and worked in the restaurant industry.

On July 31, 1918, Ransom enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Private and served with Bakery Company, 490 Q.M.C. Until he fell ill and was sent back to Schenectady, Ransom was stationed at Camp Upton in New York. Ransom died from his illness at the post hospital in Rotterdam, New York, on April 5, 1919. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
