Richard Frederick Callahan, the son of Arthur and Clara (Lukens) Callahan, was born on October 8, 1924, in Niskayuna, New York. He attended Nott Terrace High School, where he played football and was a well-known speed skater.
Richard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He held the rank of Private First Class and was an AA Gunner with Battery L, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division. Richard was lost overboard from the USS Henry on February 9, 1945, while en route to Iwo Jima. He is remembered at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii.
