Robert Abbott Peabody, the son of George and Florence (Mundorff) Peabody, was born on July 10, 1923, in Manhattan, New York. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1940 and later attended St. Lawrence College, where he was a member of the varsity skiing team.

Robert joined the United States Army Air Corps in March 1943. He underwent training in Biloxi, Mississippi, and Nashville, Tennessee. He held the rank of Second Lieutenant and served with the 565th Bomb Squadron, 389th Bomb Group. On January 31, 1945, Robert and his crew were on a mission to Brunswick, Germany when it was recalled due to severe weather. The plane crashed near Scarborough, England, with the cause unknown. He is remembered at the Oakdale Cemetery, Massachusetts.
