World War II (1939-1945)

Robert Melvin Thompson was born in Scotia, New York, on August 21, 1918. He grew up in Troy, New York, and by 1940 he was living in the town of Rotterdam in Schenectady County. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.  

On April 6, 1944, Robert enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Croft in South Carolina. He was a private serving with Troop C, 106th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 106th Cavalry Group. On March 31, 1945, Robert was killed in battle in France. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in France.
