Sidney Podhoretz was born in Schenectady, New York, on February 3, 1925. He grew up in the city of Schenectady on Chrisler Avenue and graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1944. Before entering the military, he worked for the Pleasant Valley Meat Market.
Sidney enlisted in the United States Army. While stationed in Avon Park, Florida, he was offered the chance to fly home for the weekend. On August 5, 1945, while Sidney was returning from his weekend in Schenectady, the B-17 Flying Fortress he was on caught fire six miles outside Ridgeland, South Carolina. Sidney did not survive after the pilot ordered everyone to jump. He is buried in the Beth Israel Cemetery in Rotterdam, New York.
