Vincent D. Sapone was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on September 2, 1920. By 1930, he and his family had settled in the city of Schenectady. Before entering the service, he graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1939 and worked for General Electric.
On July 31, 1942, Vincent enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a staff sergeant serving with the 350th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group. On October 8, 1943, Vincent was on a mission to strike targets in Bremen, Germany; during the bomb run, Vincent's aircraft was hit by flak and exploded. His remains were retrieved by German soldiers and buried in a local cemetery before being returned to the United States in 1950. He is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
