Walter Edwin Kadel Jr., the son of Walter and Pauline Kadel, was born on July 16, 1924, in Port Jervis, Orange County, New York. He relocated to Schenectady after graduating from Port Jervis High School to work for General Electric.
On July 17, 1942, Walter enlisted in the United Army Air Corps. He earned his silver wings at the Army Air Forces Flexible Gunnery School at Tyndall Field, Florida. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant and served with the 444th AAF Bomb Squadron. Walter was an aerial gunner aboard a B-26 Marauder Bomber when it crashed over Northern Italy on August 23, 1944. He is buried in the Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Jervis, New York.
